Dr. Alaa Meshref is a Professor of Urology in the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University (Egypt). Urology or urosurgery is a branch of surgery specializing in genito-urinary diseases, mainly the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra and testicles.

Dr. Meshref is especially interested in diseases of the prostate. He is an expert in transrectal ultrasonography, in which an ultrasound probe is inserted through the anal opening to view the prostate on an ultrasound machine. Biopsies (samples) may be taken from the prostate very accurately under transrectal ultrasound guidance.

I started my blog “elprostata.com,” which will have weekly articles with a wealth of information about the prostate, its diseases, and how to diagnose and treat them.

In the current website, contact information of Dr. Meshref will be available, as well as the different places where he can see his patients (clinics). A list of hospitals where Dr. Meshref performs his operations is also available in this website.

Centres where Dr. Meshref can perform transrectal ultrasound examination of the prostate are mentioned under the link “Ultrasound.” Different aspects of the examination are mentioned briefly, mainly how to get prepared to perform the test, and what to expect during and after the test.

Besides his medical profession, Dr. Meshref was ex-champion of Egypt in Table Tennis (ping-pong). He is currently executive Vice President of ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) and Treasurer of the Egyptian Olympic Committee.
