Instructions for Biopsies

Preparation for Biopsies of the Prostate

  • Blood thinners like plavix should be stopped for a week prior to the test.
  • Blood thinners like Marevan or Coumadin need to be stopped for 3-5 days prior to the biopsies, and an INR blood test should be done prior to biopsies.
  • The newer blood thinners like Zarelto need to be stopped for at least 3 days.
  • There is NO need to stop aspirin prior to biopsies. Recent studies show it is safe.
  • A list of the patient’s medications should be available to check if any blood thinners are used without the patient’s knowledge.
  • An antibiotic should be started the day before the test (e.g. ciprobay 500 mg every 12 hours) and an antibiotic injection is better to be taken on the day of the biopsies (e.g. Ceftriaxone 1 GM intramuscular – may be taken every 24 hours for 3 days).
  • Please bring your serum PSA result (a blood test which is a tumor marker for prostate cancer).
