Instructions for TRUS Examination

Preparation for Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) Examination

  • A rectal enema is performed 2 hours prior to the examination. In the Egyptian pharmacies, a ready made simple enema named “Enemax” may be used.
  • The patient should not urinate for an hour prior to the test, as a semi-full urinary bladder is best for visualization of the prostate and bladder.
  • In case the patient has a catheter fixed in place, he can close the drainage bag for one hour prior to the test.
  • If the referring physician requested a serum PSA estimation (tumor marker for prostate diseases), the patient has to get the result with him, as it is a very important guide for the need for biopsies.
